The
Shipley Website (www.coachshipley.com) provided
an excellent vehicle for us to share and preserve experiences
and materials. As Mike Spears, our webmaster, has stated
on numerous occasions, the Shipley Website is a work
in progress and continues to grow each day. Check
out our website team!!!
The
Friday evening program (Jerry Meaux, Larry Bouillion);
Registration (Rocke Roy & Linda, Marianne, Janis); transportation(Robert
Trahan); D.J., Cory Menard (Chris Landry); and refreshments
from Acadiana Bottling and Schilling Distributing got
the reunion off to a great start.
Robert
Trahan and Sharee Broussard hosted the Walk of Honor.
The tour brought back many memories to those former
students who located their brick, along with those of
friends, classmates, teammates, and family.
Fan
Appreciation held in Long Gym was coordinated by
Ed Dugas; son, John; and granddaughter, Courtney . Open
to the public, this proved to be an excellent setting
for the players, coaches, managers, athletic trainers,
and loyal fans to relive memories of Long Gym and those
related experiences.
The
Presidential Suite of the Hilton provided an environment
where players could relax and visit privately. Their
hosts, Gerald Reaux and Jim Moreau, kept the room supplied
with refreshments from Acadiana Bottling, Inc., Magnolia
Liquor, and Schilling Distributing Co. Bill Lowry and
his family graciously provided all printing, including
invitations, handout, and the Shipley Check for the
UL Foundation in the amount of $35,000.
The
Saturday evening program was preceded by Clelie'
and the entire Shipley family, including Delores, Marilyn,
Patty, Amy and the grandchildren arranging beautiful
table decorations. The
Saturday evening program included Ron Gomez, Rev. Perry
Sanders, Mike Spears, Dr. Ed Dugas, Randy Price, Dean
Church, Rocke Roy(for Tom Colwell), Bo Lamar, Tom Cox,
Mac Price, Sam Thomas (and teammates), Dr. Jim Caillier,
Rep. Ernie Alexander, and Rev. Dale Griffith.
Coach
and Delores presented a check to Dr. Ed Dugas for the
"Beryl Shipley Mended Hearts Scholarship" for
$35,000. Without our great sponsors, contributors, and
donors, who are listed on the Shipley Website, this
would not have been possible.
A
special video presented by Ron Gomez highlighted
the Shipley Era. Coach Shipley closed the program by
acknowledging family, friends, players, managers, coaches,
members of the Reunion Committee and reflected on the
Shipley era.
I
want to thank Sam's teammates for the beautiful chair
and Mac and those who contributed to Ed's gifts.
The
Hilton provided a beautiful setting for the event
and served as the reunion headquarters. Filming of the
entire reunion was done by Channel One(Brian Butcher).
Digital pictures were taken by Johan Adendorff and Eric
Nelson provided his latest patriotic poem.
The
Lafayette Convention and Visitors Commission (Virginia
Judice and Heather James) helped with name tags and
information. There were numerous "Lagniappe" activities
such as ditty bags prepared by Gerald and Pat Reaux
, with assistance from Jim Moreau and Ron Gomez.
The
UL Lafayette Scholarship, Development, Registrar, Kinesiology,
Alumni and Foundation Offices were most cooperative
and supportive.
The
local media were helpful in their promotion of the
era and reunion. Others who provided special assistance
included Delores Shipley, Carolyn Broussard, Marilyn
Watson, Bill Watson, Cheramie Broussard, Abby Broussard,
Ralph Peters, Mary Beth (Lowry's), and the Hilton staff.
I
want to thank all who attended the reunion as your
presence contributed to the enjoyment of such a heart-warming
weekend. Others have stated that the Shipley Era was
something special and this reunion confirmed those sentiments.
It truly was one of the highlights of my life and I
want you to know I appreciate everything done on behalf
of me, my coaches, players, and all who were a part
of the Shipley Era. I am truly blessed.
